2 What is chiptunes? Chiptunes are also known as chip music or 8-bit music In this genre, artists re-use old gaming consoles such as the Nintendo GameBoy to utilize their programmable sound generators. Using custom ROMs and by hacking the actual sound generating circuits artists can bend the device to their liking

3 Chiptunes History The precursor to chiptunes is when people first attempted to make music using computers The first computer in the world to play music was the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Automatic Computer (CSIRAC) in 1950, shown below. Unfortunately, the music was never recorded.

4 Daniel Behrens AKA Danimal Cannon
One of the most popular chiptune musicians is actually from Buffalo His name is Daniel Behrens but he is better known as Danimal Cannon He primarily makes his music on GameBoys using a custom rom called Little Sound DJ. He couples his traditional electric guitar with chiptunes and mesmerizing visualizations creating an awe-inspiring performance TED Talk with Dan: Example of Dan’s work:

You can buy special game carts for various systems that allow you to access the console's programmable sound generator Danimal Cannon uses Little Sound DJ which you can get here: You can flash the ROM to a GameBoy cartridge or you can run the ROM in an Emulator The emulator simulates the hardware of the GameBoy in software so you can run GameBoy games such as Little Sound DJ on your computer The most popular emulator is VisualBoyAdvance which you can get here:
