1 1 3 Why Mental Maths is SO Important! 2

2 What is Mental Maths? Doing a calculation in your head without using a pencil, paper, or calculator!

3 Where should we be doing Mental Maths?
At school (of course) At home In the car At the shops With our friends EVERYWHERE!!!!

4 But I have a calculator! So what!
Mental maths is about discovering strategies Its about figuring out how numbers work together Learning about how different maths functions are related to each other. It is the building block upon which all other mathematics is built.

5 Mental Maths build up – Addition and subtraction
First you learn to add Then you get repeated addition (multiplication) and repeated subtraction (division) Fractions Factors and prime factorising Ratios Substitution Algebra Exponents….

6 Great, no pressure! Mental maths is only the key to unlock the door to understanding mathematics!

7 So, what can we do to make Mental maths fun?

8 Mental Maths Games Calculator Mental Maths The mental maths race
Last man standing Repeated addition (number patterns / multiplying) Repeated subtraction Random numbers games Discovering 10s, 100s and 1000s Snap-Factors

9 The Mental Maths Race On your calculator: Press Math Drill Question?25
◄ + ‒ x ÷ + ‒ x ÷ ► SELECT & [ENTER] On your calculator: Press

10 Last Man Standing Using drill Mode All students stand and close eyes
Give suggested answers It helps to have an emulator.

11 Repeated Addition and Subtraction
ANS + 7= 101. Press Choose Pick a number to start with Press OR Enter the number to add. Press and same number Keep pressing

12 Random Number Games To get to Random:
0: RAND 1: R-DICE 2: R-COIN 3: R-INT To get to Random: Press Choose 1 option by pressing the corresponding number. Multiples of, counting in, factors of, multiply Anything you like!

13 Discovering 10s, 100s and 1000s 81 x 10 = 810. You can make it as advanced or as complicated as you like Type in any number, eg. 81 Press And type in 10, Now press Add another And see what happens to your answer

14 Snap-Factors SNAP! Using the random function.
RANDOM x 10 = Using the random function. Pair children in groups from 2 to about 4 One child in the group is the big number: He/She chooses R-INT (3) The other children are the factors: They can choose R-DICE (1) or RAND x 10 (or 20) If a factor belongs with the big number, the first student to say snap gets a point. First student to 10 points is the reigning snap-factor master! SNAP! R.INT = 99.

15 Three other handy things teachers should know
×55= 68 3 4 Class marks: Press Type in converting to at the top Type in converting from at the bottom Type in first student’s mark and Then type in next students mark and Repeat

16 Class Averages Press then
𝑥 = 48.2 Press then Type in all your students marks by typing in a mark and then pressing When done, press To get average press

17 Multiples of Numbers Bigger than 12
X ANS 0 0 1 17 Press Type in the number Press times. Scroll up and down the table using and
