2. Influential Documents
 Magna  Carta  English Bill  of Rights 

3. The Magna Carta, 1215 Limits the power of the King of England
No unfair imprisonment; Trial by jury
Consult with nobles before raising taxes
**Only helped NOBLES

4. English Bill of Rights, 1689
Englishmen had certain civil and political rights that could not be taken away. These included:
freedoms:
To petition the king
To bear arms for self-defense
To elect (vote for) members of Parliament
Of speech in Parliament
From cruel and unusual punishments

5. John Locke’s Natural Rights
People were born w/ right to life, liberty and to own property
Purpose of govt. is to protect these “unalienable” rights
Rulers who denied these rights must be overthrown
influenced Thomas Jefferson (Declaration of Independence) 1776

6. Virginia House of Burgesses
1st elected representative assembly in America.
Purpose: take some control away from the strict governor & give power to representatives (burgesses)
Reps meet once a year to make laws.
Before this, England had all the decision making power in the colonies.

7. Mayflower Compact 1st social contract for self-govt in America.
Purpose: Order & Success for the good of the colony’s survival

8. Fundamental Orders of Connecticut
1st written constitution in America
Purpose: maintain peace & union through Biblical values among the settlers
Set up a govt. with 3 branches
Led by Thomas Hooker, who wanted their govt. to be pleasing to God

No martial law in time of peace
habeas corpus: Prisoners may challenge arrest (must have evidence to be imprisoned)
