Ethnic minority: A member of an ethnic group (race) which is much smaller than the majority group
Multi-ethnic society: Many different races and cultures living together in one society
Racism: The belief that some races are superior to others
Community cohesion: A common vision and shared sense of belonging for all groups in society

5. Multi-Ethnic society
The UK has historically been a place where people of many nationalities and ethnicities have lived. As we are an island we have been a place that people have travelled to and moved to for many reasons.
In the past, the UK has taken over lots of different countries and people have started lives there. However, now people are moving to the UK for better standards of living and for jobs, to escape conflict and persecution.

8. Problems of prejudice and discrimination
Treating people less favourably because of their ethnicity or discriminating against someone because of their race is a problem that arises in countries that have many races living together (multi-ethnic societies). When discrimination is because of a person’s race or ethnic background it is often called racism.
What reasons can you think of for people being racist?

14. Community cohesion
As seen in by the example we have just heard the riots in summer 2011, differences between people, whether due to ethnic type or other factors such as religion, can cause conflicts and problems within communities.
The Government has recognised that something needs to be done to bring people together. Community cohesion is to encourage people to work together for the good of everyone.
