1 Hungry Caterpillar Balloon Chain
How does this work?

2 Induced Charge Balloon has gained additional negative charges.
As you bring it near to the neutral wall the electrons in the wall are pushed away from their atoms. This creates a very thin positively charged layer on the surface of the wall The positive charge attracts the negative charge keeping the balloon in place. Voila! Wall

3 State that there are two kinds charge and describe how they interact
Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson you should be able to… Recognise that insulating materials can become charged when rubbed with another insulating material. State that there are two kinds charge and describe how they interact Describe static electricity in terms of the movement of electrons

4 Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson you should... Be able to recognise that insulating materials can become charged when rubbed with another insulating material. Be able to state that there are two kinds charge and describe how they interact Be able to describe static electricity in terms of the movement of electrons Electrostatics In pairs collect two acetate strips, two polythene strips, a cloth and half a sheet of paper (you will need to tear it up into little bits). Vigorously rub one of the strips with the cloth then bring it near to the pieces of paper Vigorously rub a second strip then bring it close to one end of the first strip EXT: Put the strip close running water – what happens?

5 Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson you should... Be able to recognise that insulating materials can become charged when rubbed with another insulating material. Be able to state that there are two kinds charge and describe how they interact Be able to describe static electricity in terms of the movement of electrons Static charge builds on an insulating material when electrons transfer from one surface to another

6 Give up electrons = positive charge
These materials will tend to give up electrons when brought in contact with other materials. Give up electrons = positive charge

7 Attract electrons = negative charge
These materials will tend to attract electrons when brought in contact with other materials. Attract electrons = negative charge

8 Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson you should... Be able to recognise that insulating materials can become charged when rubbed with another insulating material. Be able to state that there are two kinds charge and describe how they interact Be able to describe static electricity in terms of the movement of electrons Two different rods will attract each other if they have different charge: Two rods made of the same material will repel each other due to having the same charge:

9 Electrons Ions Charge Transfer Friction
Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson you should... Be able to recognise that insulating materials can become charged when rubbed with another insulating material. Be able to state that there are two kinds charge and describe how they interact Be able to describe static electricity in terms of the movement of electrons For your notes... Explain how a static charge can build up on a plastic strip Electrons Ions Charge Transfer Friction

10 Teacher notes This three-stage animation illustrates how static electricity is used to spray paint a car. Suitable prompts include: Stage 1: What instrument is used to spray paint a car? Stage 2: Do the spray gun and the car body have the same overall charge? Stage 3: Why is it important to reduce waste in factories?

15 The Van de Graaff Generator

16 Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson you should... Be able to recognise that insulating materials can become charged when rubbed with another insulating material. Be able to state that there are two kinds charge and describe how they interact Be able to describe static electricity in terms of the movement of electrons Write the following statements in the correct order to create a flow chart: Electrons are transferred from the belt to the metal dome Initially, there is neutral charge everywhere Each strand of hair has a negative charge The belt is turned Her hair sticks up The dome becomes negatively charged Electrons are stripped from the iron wool to the belt The electrons flow from the dome, through the girl to her hair Like charges repel so each strand tries to get away from the others Now answer the following questions in your book: 1. Why does the girl stand in a plastic tray? 2. What will happen if someone shakes her hand? Why?

17 HOMEWORK For next lesson
