Adaptations
2
Think about how you dress in the winter…
You don’t wear shorts and a bathing suit when it’s cold outside! You wear warm clothes – a hat, mittens, a jacket, and boots – to protect yourself from the cold weather
3
What if you have a snowball fight?
You probably run away from the person throwing the snowball, hide behind a tree, or maybe try to sneak up on that person and throw some back!
4
The way you dress in the winter and the way you run and hide from someone throwing a snowball are kinds of ADAPTATIONS
5
There are 2 types of adaptations…
Physical Behavioral
6
Physical Adaptations A physical adaptation helps an animal survive in the environment Camouflage is a type of physical adaptation A chameleon can change its color to match its surroundings. Can you do that?
7
Physical Adaptations Body coverings and parts like claws, beaks, thick fur, skulls and teeth are types of physical adaptations too! Polar bears have thick, white fur to keep them warm and hidden in the cold snow!
8
Behavioral Adaptations
A behavior is the way an animal typically acts in a situation A cat’s ability to sneak up on a mouse is a behavior that is an adaptation A bee dancing to tell other bees where food can be found is an adaptation
9
Certain adaptations let an organism get food that others can’t
10
Self-Defense Most organisms have adaptations that help keep them from being eaten by enemies Many animals will run away or hide Some plants and insects have a bad-tasting chemical that makes them a poor choice for a meal
