Hot Issue All Year -Round School Student Sample
2
Original Reason For Summer Vacation
Children could help their parents on the farm during the busiest time of the year. Few American young children live on farms now because we no longer have a primarily agricultural society.
3
First Argument All Year-Round School
In Japan and Germany, students go to school all year-round. Students from both countries score higher than students in American schools on achievement tests.
4
Second Argument Students come back after a summer vacation and no one can remember what they learned the year before. With the year- round schedule, students can have shorter vacations so everyone will remember what they learned.
5
Third Argument School buildings are empty for ten weeks, which is expensive and a waste of money. Schools with the year-round schedule have “intersession” classes during the short two- to- three week breaks during the year. Students can take intersession classes when they need extra help in a subject area.
6
Fourth Argument Students don’t always have room in their schedule to take courses that they are interested in. Schools with a year-round schedule can provide a variety of new courses that will be fun for students.
7
Fifth Argument Everyone gets bored during long vacations.
Teenagers hang out on the streets and get into trouble. Law enforcement officers report that juvenile crime goes up during the summer. Young people in every city complain that there is nothing to do. Year-round school will keep them occupied and involved with new activities.

Summary A year-round schedule will :
Help students learn more and do better on tests Make better use of school buildings Keep young people out of trouble
