Chinese Admiral that had a fleet of Treasure Ships in the “Western Ocean” - what Chinese called Indian Ocean. 7 major trips on these huge boats. 100x heavier than European boats of that time. Maps he used show possible travels beyond Cape of Good Hope (S. America) Helped spread Islam through Indian Ocean. Treasure Ships

3 IBN BATTUTA 73,000 miles of travels through Muslim World and beyond! (approx. 44 today’s countries) Spain to China (much farther than M.P) His journey were all recorded by HIM. Born in Morocco When on his HAJJ (pilgrimage to Mecca) and just kept traveling. Known today not only as a traveler and writer, but also as someone who aided in the conversion of people to Islam where he traveled.

4 MARCO POLO Venetian Explorer (today’s Italy)
Traveled Silk Road to China Visited with Kublai Khan (great grandson of Genghis Khan for 17 years…sharing riches of West. Gives great details of interactions. Traveled with father and uncle who were merchants interested in trade with East. Became a great inspiration to others to travel to the East. Christopher Columbus was to have had his book on his boats. MARCO POLO
