Space - What's out there? Video “Introduction to Astronomy” -
2
Exploring our Universe
Lesson 1 Exploring our Universe Q. When do astronauts have lunch A. At launch time!
3
Astronomy – “Is it true that the end of the world is in 2012?”
Expected Learning: to introduce our Astronomy science unit – “Is it true that the end of the world is near”?
4
Getting started On the next blank page in your books, write the heading “Astronomy – Is it true that the end of the world is in 2012?” Draw the table below and make it fill the WHOLE page Each lesson you should fill in the table to help keep track of what you have done and help you study for tests Date Focus Page Number Homework
5
Prior Knowledge In your glossary, write down all the words associated with space (apart from the Earth) that you know and give your definition of each.
6
Outcomes By the end of this section you should be able to.. At the Level Know that: Earth is one of a number of planets that orbit the Sun: the Moon orbits Earth; Earth orbits the Sun and the relative positions of Earth, Sun and planets Know that the Universe consists of: stars and planets, comets and meteors, black holes, large groups of stars called galaxies Describe why stars can be seen even though they are far away Describe that gravitational force determines the motion of planets and satellites Above the Level Know the relative positions of planets, stars, comets, meteors, galaxies and black holes Know that circular motion requires a centripetal force and that gravity provides the centripetal force for orbital motion

Asteroids Class discussion – “What information do we already know about Asteroids?” Ideas Smaller than planets Float around Have the Asteroid belt outside of Mars Have more outside of Neptune Sometimes they strike the Earth They cause the craters we see on the Moon
14
Asteroid belt In "The Empire Strikes Back," the fifth episode of the "Star Wars" films, Han Solo and his crew of fellow Rebels escape from the planet Hoth, only to fly straight into an asteroid field. The field is densely packed, and with huge, spinning rocky matter careening back and forth around the Millennium Falcon, Han Solo must deftly maneuver his spaceship to safety. Unfortunately, according to C3PO, the odds of successfully doing so are very slim -- only 3,720 to 1.
15
Asteroid belt As it turns out, navigating through the asteroid belt wouldn't be quite as dramatic -- only a handful of asteroids are big enough to cause any damage to a spacecraft, and there's much more space between them than you might think.
19
Lesson 1 Reflection – From the Sun identify in order the Planets and the Asteroid belt.
