U.S. Sen. John McCain is this year's recipient of the Liberty Medal. The medal, which carries with it a $100,000 prize, honors those who work to secure liberty around the globe. The six-term Republican senator from Arizona received the award Monday at Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center for his "lifetime of sacrifice and service" to the country. McCain says he's humbled to join the ranks of past winners. “It has been my greatest privilege in life to swear an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, beginning with my enlistment in the Navy and continuing through my service in the United States Senate,” McCain said in a statement. “Each time I have raised my right hand, I do so with enormous weight of the people who elected me to serve.” Former Vice President Joe Biden presented McCain with the award. Other recent recipients of the annual award, which was established in 1988, include a range of political figures, activists, and entertainers, including the Dalai Lama, Malala Yousafzai, Hillary Clinton, Muhammad Ali, Steven Spielberg, Mikhail Gorbachev, Tony Blair, and Bono.

A drone crashed into a commercial airplane in Canada the government said Sunday. A plane operated by charter airline Skyjet was approaching Quebec City's International Airport on Thursday when a drone struck one of its wings. There were six passengers and two crew members aboard the plane. The rapidly growing use of drones by consumers around the globe has led to an upswing in the number of encounters between the remote-controlled devices and planes. But the incident in Canada may be the first confirmed collision. Transportation authorities in various countries have been trying to come up with rules to avoid a disaster.
Last summer, a group of hackers showed how easy it is to infiltrate a bunch of voting machines. During a conference held in Las Vegas, they exposed flaws in election equipment currently used in the U.S. Now, they want to make sure election infrastructure is better protected. It was announced that hackers in its community will form a coalition comprised of cyber and national security leaders, academic institutions, and government associations to focus on ways to make elections more secure on the federal, state and local level.
