Objective/Warm-Up SWBAT describe reactions of acids and bases and discuss the pH scale. What is the molarity of sodium hydroxide if 20.0 ml of the solution is neutralized by 28.0 ml of 1.00M HCl solution? Answer: 1.4M

Objective/Warm-Up SWBAT describe titrations and complete titration calculations. What is the molarity of the sodium hydroxide solution that must be added to neutralize 75 ml of a M HCl solution if 50 mL of NaOH is used in the titration? Answer: M
3
What happens in a titration or neutralization reaction?
HCl + NaOH HOH + NaCl Acid + Base water + salt If moles of acid [H+] = moles of base [OH-], then the solution is neutral. MaVa=MbVb
4
What if the acid is polyprotic? (Has more than one acidic hydrogen?)
Multiply the Molarity by the number of hydrogens. Example: What is the molarity of sodium hydroxide if 20.0 ml of the solution is neutralized by 17.4 ml of 1.00M H3PO4 solution? MaVa=MbVb (1.00 x 3)x17.4 = Mb x 20.0 Answer: 2.61M
5
The base can have more than one OH- as well…
How many mL of 0.02 M of Ca(OH)2 must be added to 75 mL of 0.05 M HCl to make a neutral solution? Answer: 94 ml

Lab: Titrations Burets are expensive-Please be very careful in the lab. Aprons and goggles are a MUST! We are using acids and bases. Your endpoint is a light pink-not magenta. If you get magenta, you will have to start over.
