Mental Disorders Mental disorder: is an illness of the mind that can effect the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of a person, preventing him or her from leading a happy, healthful, and productive life

Types of Mental Disorders
Organic or functional Organic- caused by physical illness or an injury that affects the brain Functional- has a psychological cause and does not involve brain damage

Mental Disorders Mood disorder: organic Clinical depression:
Anxiety disorder: real or imagined fears are difficult to control Phobia: irrational fear of something specific Obsessive compulsive disorder: trapped in pattern of repeated thoughts Panic disorder: sudden unexplained feelings of terror Post-Traumatic Stress disorder: developed after exposure to a terrfying event Mood disorder: organic Clinical depression: 19 million people effected Bipolar disorder: extreme mood changes “highs”, “Lows” Eating disorders Conduct disorders Schizophrenia: people loses contact with reality

Personality Disorders
Antisocial -tend to be irritable, aggressive, impulsive, and violent. Borderline personality - Experience series of troubled relationships, engage in high risk activities, many have poor self esteem Passive aggressive personality - Uncooperative they resent being told what to do, yet they rely on others for direction. Anger over issue of control

Behavior Therapies Therapy that applies learning principles to the elimination of unwanted behaviors. The behaviors are the problems- so we must change the behaviors.
