1 Studio – Define & Assignment #1 Introduction to Human Computer Interaction & Design Hao-Hua Chu National Taiwan University March 8, *** Adapt teaching materials from the Stanford HCI course (with permission & many thanks to Prof. James Landay of Stanford) as well as Stanford D.School 9/22/2015

2 Studio: Define Exercises
Empathy map (40 min) POV Want-AD (20 min) Team discussion (20 min) September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

3 What is Empathy map? An Empathy map can help tee up a discussion about the needs a user has. The discussion will be centered around what was observed, and what can be inferred about these user groups’ beliefs and emotion. September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

4 Empathy Map a tool to organize & visualize data & draw out insights
Left: observations Right: inferences Say: quotes from users Do: action/behaviors from users Think: what might users be thinking? What does it tell you about his/her belief? Feel: what emotions users feel? say think An Empathy Map is one tool to help you synthesize your observations and draw out unexpected insights. On The Left are observations and on the right on inferences Use your notes, audio, & video from your fieldwork to fill out the 4 quadrants SAY: What are some quotes and defining words your user said? DO: What actions and behaviors did you notice? THINK: What might your user be thinking? What does this tell you about his or her beliefs? FEEL: What emotions might your subject be feeling? do feel September 29, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

5 Sample Empathy Map: Bring professionals to classrooms and engage students about real-world business challenges September 29, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

6 Empathy map exercise Watch Car mechanic video: Erica (truck owner) Fill in empathy map (Team work for 15 min) September 24, 2015 dt+UX: Design Thinking for User Experience Design, Prototyping & Evaluation

8 What is POV Want-Ad A creative way for designers to synthesize all of the needs and insights that they discovered during the empathy phase into an actionable problem statement. To write a Want-AD that accurately depicts the challenge that they are trying to address for their user.
