2 Today What is ORCID? Benefits to Researchers
Flinders Pilot Project

3 What is ORCID? ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a unique and persistent personal identifier that connects researchers with their research outputs. Open, non-profit, community-driven organization supporting linkages between systems. ORCID is unique in its ability to reach across disciplines, research sectors and national boundaries and in its cooperation with other identifier systems. The ORCID identifier is a key component that supports system-to-system interoperability. ORCID is a non-profit organization, working in collaboration with other stakeholders in the research community. ORCID is an open, collaborative effort. Our source code is open for other institutions to use. The number of iDs issued increases regularly. Registry statistics are updated weekly and are available at

4 Eliminate name ambiguity
One person may have multiple name variations. ORCID iDs eliminate name ambiguities, distinguishing you from other researchers and helping to ensure your work is attributed to you.

In this example, when you take the Danish name Jens Åge Smærup Sørensen, you find that it can be represented in several dozen formats. How confusing! Using a unique, persistent ORCID identifier removes this ambiguity. And on and on it goes …

6 The ORCID http://orcid.org/0000-0002-1825-0097
16-digit number, expressed as URI DOI for people Complete record of your research Register for an ORCID iD International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI): ISNI has reserved a block of numbers for use by ORCID, to avoid assignment overlaps. All you need to set up your ORCID iD is your name and an address.

7 ORCID is a hub connecting the research landscape
Universities & Research institutions Funding Agencies Publishers / Manuscript Submission Systems Other Research Identifiers Repositories & More ORCID is a hub that connects you and your research activities through the embedding of ORCID identifiers in existing research workflows, data systems and other identifier systems. ORCID iDs do not replace existing researcher identifiers; rather ORCID creates links among these identifiers, further helping to connect research and researchers throughout the world. ORCID is founded on interoperability with multiple systems and institutions. ORCID allows you to link with other identifier systems, including those maintained by funders and publishers, and exchange data freely with those research information systems. ORCID is an independent author identifier that has developed relationships with publishers, major grant funders (NIH, Wellcome and NHMRC), research organisations and other author identifiers such as ResearcherID and Scopus Author ID. It has gained prominence within the international research community over the last couple of years, in a large part because it has been able to develop integrations with other parties that would traditionally be seen as competition. Flinders has embarked on implementing ORCID because it has become the only author identifier used in the research life cycle that is independent, non-proprietary and has built integration in a way that is ensuring it is becoming ubiquitous in the scholarly research life cycle. As a result of their endeavours more and more governments and government funders have started supporting ORCID. NHMRC and ARC have released statements of support and are building it into their own workflows (following NIH (US) and Wellcome trust (UK)). Research & Scholarly Societies

8 ORCID integrators The applicant profile section of NHMRC’s Research Grants Management System (RGMS) was changed in 2014 to allow researchers to include their unique identifier (such as ORCID) when updating their CV and Profile, whilst the ARC is currently considering options for the development of a similar capacity within its Research Management System (RMS 2.0). Universities Australia, the Australasian Research Management Society, and the Council of Australian University Librarians have also endorsed a Joint Statement of Principle to adopt (ORCID), and will continue their collaboration with Australian National Data Service, ARC and NHMRC to progress this work.

9 Benefits to the Researcher
Researchers need to: ensure their work is discoverable and connected to them throughout their career; minimize the time they spend entering repetitive data online; and eliminate name ambiguity, distinguish themselves from other researchers and ensuring proper attribution. Image by opensource.com

10 For benefits to be realized…
For benefits to be realised For benefits to be realized… Researchers must claim and use ORCID iDs Research information processes and systems must embed ORCID iDs and link back with the ORCID Registry Want to highlight a key point in order for the mission of ORCID – and the benefits to you – to be realized Researchers must register for and use an ORCID iD Organizations (such as universities, funders, publishers) must embed ORCID iDs and link them back to the ORCID registry. The reality is that the registry of researchers is growing at the same time that integration/functionality is growing. Organizations are embedding ORCID iDs into systems for them to benefit from ORCID's interoperability. The research community must support the ORCID mission by becoming a member. As more organizations embed ORCID iDs, the more powerful the ORCID registry becomes.

11 Benefits for Research Admins
Delegate access allows admins to post to an ORCID record on the users behalf. Use ORCID in Scopus and Web of Science to find the h-index.

12 Pilot Project - Increase awareness and use of ORCID iDs.
- Target group: School of Psychology. ‘Read only’ access. 22 of 69 School of Psychology academics (31%) 67 Academics/Researchers from other areas The joint Library/Research Services pilot project sought to implement ORCID read access only, using the University’s research information system (RePortal). Target Group: The School of Psychology were selected as the pilot group Technical Specifications: The pilot used ‘read access’ only to capture the ORCID iD of authorised users. Pilot details: Relatively short uptake time frame (Pilot data capture period = 3 weeks). Rollout via only (as specifically requested by Psychology). Seeking ‘read access’ instead of ‘write access’, which limits the incentive to create an ORCID. Short promotional time frame (Promotion occurred during data capture period = 3 weeks). Some high profile people from outside the School of Psychology joined up during the pilot including: Prof David Day [former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research)] Prof Jeri Kroll [Dean of Graduate Research] Prof Ross McKinnon [Associate Dean & Director of Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer] Prof John Long [Strategic Professor in Palaeontology] Aprof Damien Riggs [Associate Professor in the School of Social and Policy Studies, Social Work and Social Planning] Prof Carlene Wilson[Research Cancer Prevention]
