US History Course Description Grade Scale Grade Breakdown
Ms. Wilson’s Class Highland West JH US History “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” - George Santayana Course Description Grade Scale The course is designed to highlight the major political, social, cultural, and economic developments of America from European colonization through Students will understand the diverse cultures and ethnic groups that contributed to the making of America’s social fabric, and understand the political developments of American democracy. During the course of the year students will be given one major project per nine weeks. These projects will vary according to the content that is being covered.. A = 100% - 90% B = 89% - 80% C = 79% - 70% D = 69% - 60% F = 59% - 0% Grade Breakdown Course Outline Test / Quizzes % (chapter test, projects, section quizzes) Daily Grades % (bellwork, workbooks, group work, participation) Benchmarks 20% (semester exams) Washington Presidency, Louisiana Purchase, War of 1812, Jacksonian Democracy, Indian Removal Unit 1: Beginnings of American History Unit 4: The Nation Expands and Changes Colonial settlement and politics Unit 2: Forming a New Nation The North, The South, Manifest Destiny, Mexican-American War The American Revolution and the Constitution Unit 5: Civil War and Reunion Unit 3: The New Republic Election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln, Civil War, Emancipation Proclamation What do I do if I am absent? Always check the class calendar and chalkboard for assignments and test dates. A student has two extra days to turn in any work assigned on a day a student was absent. If a quiz was administered on a day a student was absent, the quiz must be made up on the first day the student returns. If a test was administered on a day a student was absent, the test must be made up within two days of returning to school. If previously assigned work was due on the day of the absence, the work is due on the first day the student returns otherwise it is considered late and will only receive 70% credit. Work not completed and turned in by the assigned date is considered late. If a student is absent on the date work is due, the assignment is due the first day the student returns to school. COMPLETED LATE WORK will only receive partial credit (70% of the assignment total). INCOMPLETE LATE WORK will not be graded and will result in a zero for the assignment. (405)

What are the consequences if I don’t follow class rules?
Ms. Wilson’s Class Highland West JH Class Rules 1. Follow directions quickly. 2. Raise your hand for permission to speak. 3. No cell phones. 4. Make smart choices. 5. Keep your dear teacher HAPPY. Class Expectations Turn work in on time. Be in your seat when bell rings. Everyone in class must participate. Keep desk area clean. Must use pencil, black, or blue ink. Be respectful of classmates and faculty. No talking during class without permission. No food or drinks in the classroom. (NO GUM) Follow all rules in the handbook. What are the consequences if I don’t follow class rules? 1st Offense- verbal warning 2nd Offense – teacher/student conference 3rd Offense- lunch detention 4th Offense- before/after school detention with parent contact 5th Offense- administrative referral The student may be directly sent to an administrator depending on the severity of the offense. Cell Phone Policy Cell phones must be placed on silent and put away upon entering the classroom. Cell phones may only be used under the direct instruction of Ms. Wilson and only for educational purposes. Absolutely no cell phone use while a substitute is present. School electrical outlets will not be used as charging stations for students. Cell phone cameras and audio recorders may not be used in the classroom. The teacher assumes no liability for lost or stolen cell phones. Bring your phone at your own risk. Using your cell phone without permission from the teacher or abusing the rules of use will result in your phone being taken away and other consequences as listed in the HWJH handbook. Tardy Policy Students have five minutes between classes in order to do everything they need before the next class.. Therefore all students not in class when the bell rings will be counted tardy. Two tardies = Absence Bathroom Policy Students will not be allowed to go the restroom without an agenda. Students will not be allowed to go to the restroom during the first and last ten minutes of the class period.. **exceptions will be made on a case by case basis.** How will I check my grade in class? Progress reports will be sent home every three weeks in paper form. Parents and students are also strongly encouraged to check the Parent Portal on a weekly basis to view the most current grades for EVERY class. You can set up your Parent Portal account through the counselor’s office. (405)
