Publisher: The Rourke Press, Inc. 2001 Genre: non-fiction Unit Theme: Diversity Activity: Have an interpreter come visit the class. Have the students learn some basic sign language. Summary: This book teaches other about being deaf. It shares information about what can cause hearing loss. The author shares ways that deaf individuals can communicate, some lip read, some use sign language, and some write notes. The book also shares an interview with a child who is deaf. What makes this book multicultural?: The book is multicultural because it is teaching students about the life of a deaf individual.

Publisher: Capstone Press, 2012 Genre: Non Fiction Unit Theme: Families Activity: Posters to share what their family traditions are Summary: This book talks about different families and their cultures. It includes, Mexico, China, India, Africa, Middle Eastern, Navajo, and Sweden. The back of the book has great resources for more information. What makes the book multicultural? The book shares information about other countries and their cultures. The author includes some clothes, food, and activities from these cultures.

Cinco de Mayo Celebrating Hispanic Pride Carol Gnojewski
Publisher: Enslow Publishers, Inc Genre: Non Fiction Unit Theme: Cultural Holiday Activity: The class would listen to Mexican music, try foods that they celebrate with, and make a Mexican flag. Summary: The book starts with the history of Mexico in 1862, President Benito Juarez and Mexico gaining freedom. There is a section about how France wanted to take over Mexico while the Americans were fighting the Civil War. The Battle of Puebla, they let angry cows and bulls out in the direction of the French army. They won the battle but the war was not over. Cinco de Mayo is the celebration to remember those that fought against the French. The book ends with information about the food, music, and dance of the celebration. What makes this multicultural? It is teaching the students about Mexican History and ways they celebrate the people that fought in the war against France.
