Step 1: Listening for the main ideas
1 Lead-in As an English learner, we often read some English articles. The most important part of reading is to be able to understand the main idea or the main point. Only a few words are often used to make a main point. Then what about listening? Do we need to listen for the main idea? When we are listening to get the gist of something, we are listening for the general idea--- the gist.

Step 3: Writing descriptions for your pictures
The establishment of New China is really a significant event in Chinese history. In American history, there are also many famous historical events, for example the Pearl Harbor Attack. 1 Prepare for a talk about the attack on Pearl Harbor. 1) Have you ever heard about the attack on Pearl Harbor? The attack led the US into the Second World War. 2) When and where did it take place? The attack was made by Japan. The Americans were enjoying their Sunday and were attacked unexpectedly. 3) What was the result? The US lost a lot in the attack, including a large number of people and ships.

Step 4: Planning an outline for a speech
Look through the introduction with the students to know that a simple speech outline often includes seven parts: 1 a word of welcome 2 a word of thanks to the audience 3 an explanation of why the speaker is there, or what the speech is about 4 the main body of the speech: facts, names, dates and/ or history 5 your hopes for the future 6 the conclusion of the speech 7 a last word of thanks P56
