Basic idea of DE Students and teacher are separated by distance and sometime by time. Since teachers and students are separated by distance, as a result it becomes necessary to introduce an artificial communications medium that deliver information and provides a channel for interactions between them.

Definition of of DE “Distance education is planned learning that normally occurs in a different place from teaching, requiring special course design and instruction techniques, communication through various technologies, and special organization and administrative arrangements (Moore & Kearsley, p.2.).” Distance education is a study of Learning and teaching Learning that is planned and not accidental Learning that is normally in a different place from teaching Communication through various technologies

Levels of DE Single mode institution: all the faculty and staff of the institution are exclusively devoted to distance education (e.g. Athabasca University, Dual mode institution: institution that adds distance education to its previously established campus and class-based teaching (e.g. Penn State Worldcampus. ) Individual teachers: The design, teaching, and administration of the programs rests with the on-campus teachers and administrators Virtual universities and consortia: (e.g NTU, Western Governors University, California Virtual University)

Distance Education System
System: “a set of components of elements, interacting together towards a common goal” (Romiszowski, p.5). DE system consists of all the component processes that operates when teaching and learning at a distance occurs It includes learning, teaching, communication, design, management.
