2 Roots of Self-Government
England is regulating trade in the colonies. Why? Mercantilism is the belief that a nation becomes strong by keeping strict control over its trade. Exports-goods sent to other countries Imports-goods brought in from other countries.

3 Navigation Acts Series of acts passed by the Eng Parliament in the 1650s that regulated trade between Eng & its colonies. Only colonial or Eng ships could carry goods to & from the colonies Only certain products could be transported to Eng Many liked these acts, but others did not

4 Trade in Rum & Slaves The colonies produced many products but were dominated by merchants from NE Called Yankees Triangular trade was trade routes dev by the merchants because of the 3 legs forming a triangle Rum, guns, molasses to NE where rum was made; and slaves from W. Africa to use as labor

5 Colonial Government Colonies had governors usually appt by King, but some colonies elected theirs Legislature is a group of people who have the power to make laws. Who could vote? Christian white men over 21 except Catholics Property owners

6 A Bill of Rights Glorious Revolution of 1688 in Eng provided more rights. Jas II removed & Wm & Mary put on Eng throne Bill of Rights, a list of freedoms the govt promises to protect The colonies had more rights than their Eng counterparts
