1 Understanding + Managing Emotions
Grade level 6th – 9th Structure 6 scenario-based modules Learning time 2 – 3 hours Standards CCSS, NHES, HECAT Course Mission Statement Provide the tools and strategies to build the social and emotional foundation for positive development and healthy relationships. Modules Analyzing Influences Understanding + Managing Emotions Communicating Effectively Resolving Conflicts Stepping In Making Decisions Content Areas Social-Emotional Learning Character Education Healthy Relationships (The talk track below is pretty formal. Adapt as needed. Ask product for additional guidance) There’s no better time to learn about Healthy Relationships than Middle School. It is a period of transition and transformation. As children become teens, they will try out new identities, test boundaries, and experience new norms of behavior. For the first time in their lives, their main influencers are their peers, rather than their families. Before they can grow into good adults, they need a solid social and emotional foundation for their positive development and relationships. This course is designed to meet teens where they are. Through scenarios that are real to them, it teaches skills and strategies around topics such as communicating effectively, resolving conflicts, and understanding and managing emotions. Focusing equally on social and emotional learning, character, and healthy relationships, this course teaches students not just what to do in difficult situations, but how to be an effective agent of their own development. The topics we’ve settled on are drawn from the research on positive youth development, and are aligned to federal standards frameworks, notably the CDC’s National Health Education Standards (NHES). Although the online course was designed to last 2-3 hours total, our offline materials can extend that by an additional 2-3 hours.

2 Why educate on these topics?
Our expertise 62% of teachers reported instances of bullying at their school in the past month.1 of SEL programs significantly improve academic performance.2 of parents want their children to be taught about healthy relationships before age 13.3 of states support, encourage, or mandate character education. 15+ years in Health & Wellness online education Content reviewed by leading subject matter experts Focus groups of students with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds Constant iteration and course improvements 83% 70% 100% Why Now? There are a lot of reasons we consider this education important. The public and political will, as represented by parents and legislative support, is clearly behind this form of education. And they’re behind it for good reason. The type of social competence that this course builds is one of the best predictors for future outcomes—both academic and non-academic. On average, SEL programs, boost academic achievement by 11 points. Additionally, the Collaborative for Social and Emotional Learning found that SEL programs produce the following gains: 9% improvement in attitudes about self, others, and school 9% improvement in school and classroom behavior 9% decrease in conduct problems 10% decrease in emotional distress Why EverFi? We have over 15 years of experience in developing materials in this space, and our content is reviewed by industry experts in positive youth development. All of our courses go through rounds of focus testing to ensure the content is not only intellectually meaningful, but also relevant to the wide demographic we serve.
