6 Reading Agency Facts Educational impacts of reading
Children who read books often at age 10, and more than once a week at age 16, gain higher results in maths, vocabulary and spelling tests at age 16 than those who read less regularly. There is a difference in reading performance equivalent to just over a year's schooling between young people who never read for enjoyment and those who read for up to 30 minutes per day.

7 Reading Agency Facts Economic impacts of reading
16 year-olds who choose to read books for pleasure outside of school are more likely to secure managerial or professional jobs in later life.

8 Reading Agency Facts Health and wellbeing impacts of reading
Those with lower levels of literacy, are more likely to experience poor health and to believe that they have little impact on political processes, and are less likely to participate in volunteer activities. Literacy has been found to have a relationship with depression: 36% of those with low literacy were found to have depressive symptoms, compared to 20% of those with the highest levels of literacy. Reading for pleasure has been linked to a reduction in the symptoms of depression and to a reduction in the risk of developing dementia in later life. People who read books regularly are on average more satisfied with life, happier, and more likely to feel that the things they do in life are worthwhile. 76% of adults say that reading improves their life and the same number says it helps to make them feel good. Research has indicated that reading fiction is associated with higher levels of empathy and improved relationships with others.

9 Top 10 tips to help children enjoy reading
Make books part of your family life Always have books around so that you and your children are ready to read whenever there’s a chance. 2. Join your local library Get your child a library card. You’ll find the latest computer games and DVDs, plus tons and tons of fantastic books. Allow them to pick their own books, encouraging their own interests. 3. Match their interests Help them find the right book that interests them. If they’ve really enjoyed a particular book, help them find more books in that genre or by the same author. 4. All reading is good Don’t discount non-fiction, comics, graphic novels, magazines and leaflets. Reading is reading and it is all good. 5. Get comfortable! Snuggle up somewhere warm and cosy with your child, either in bed, on a beanbag or on the sofa, or make sure they have somewhere comfy when reading alone.

6. Ask questions To keep them interested in the story, ask your child questions as you read such as, ‘What do you think will happen next?’ or ‘Where did we get to last night? Can you remember what has happened already?’ 7. Read whenever you get the chance Bring along a book or magazine for any time your child has to wait, such as at a doctor’s surgery. 8. Rhyme and repetition Books and poems which include rhyme and repetition are great for encouraging your child or children to join in and remember the words. 9. Read again and again Encourage your child to re-read favourite books and poems. Re-reading helps to build up fluency and confidence. 10. Bedtime stories Regularly read with your child or children at bedtime. It’s a great way to end the day and to spend valuable time with your child.
