2 Why is the ability to read so powerful?
Creating a love of reading in children is potentially one of the most powerful ways of improve pupils chances in school, or beyond in the wider world.

Sharing reading Reading to children. Modelling reading – showing that you enjoy books too. Reading in different environments. Read about interests – find out about interests.

Decoding of words Using phonics of words to decode e.g. t o p Use of diagraphs e.g. ch, sh , ai Use of consonant clusters e.g. tr, st, sk Memorable words which cannot be sounded out e.g. the Blending and segmenting unfamiliar words will help them to decode them.

6 Being able to read does not mean you understand what you read.
Your child might sound like a good reader but may not necessarily understand what the text means. The best way to develop understanding is to talk about texts.

7 Does your child understand… …what has happened in the story
Does your child understand… …what has happened in the story? …who the characters are? …where the story is set? …what new and unfamiliar words actually mean? …what could happen next ? …how the author has tried to create different atmospheres? …how the story made them feel? Why?

8 What do we do in school? Individual reading – for everyone in KS1 – selected children in KS2. Guided Reading – Whole class/Group based using selected texts. Class Reader – Whole class text read to the children and discussed. Give the children strategies to become independent readers.

10 What can you do to help your child?
Read to them regularly and talking about the book they have read. Listening to your child read and asking them questions about what they have read. Helping them to read words around different environments e.g. outside, signs, notices in shop windows etc. Model that reading is enjoyable.
