What is Violence? The Use of physical force with intent to injure or kill, Examples- Wars, riots, stabbings, rapes, spouse abuse, child beatings, fights.

Myths vrs. Facts Most are committed by strangers.
Can be an effective way to solve problems. Best form of protection is a gun. Most is racially motivated. Certain races are more violent than others. Youth gangs responsible for majority. ½ of victims know their assaulter. Temporary solution to a problem. 2x more likely to be killed. 43x more likely to kill family than intruder. 90% are from same race. Has to do with poverty, not race. 3% are gang-related. 12% by family members.

What is Homicide? Intentional killing of another person.
A person is murdered every 28 minutes. A women is raped every 5 minutes. A violent crime occurs every 19 seconds.

Learn to ignore some conflicts Confront a person wisely Choose time & place carefully Stay calm Negotiate a solution Do the unexpected Provide the person with a way out Be willing to apologize

Mediation- involves a neutral 3rd party Your role as an onlooker Ignore people who talk bad about others Don’t spread rumors Stay away from potential fight scenes Show respect Get help…if needed
