IDENTIFICATION OF BARRIERS FOR ADHERENCE TO EXERCISE IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS - A CROSS SECTIONAL OBSERVATIONAL STUDY Dave D.1, Soni S.1, Irani A.2 1Charotar University of Science & Technology, Ashok & Rita Patel Institute of Physiotherapy, Anand, India, 2Dr Balabhai Nanavati Hospital, Department of Physiotherapy & Sports Medicine, Mumbai, India Introduction Regular exercise improves blood glucose control and can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) related complications. Physical activity can help persons with T2DM to build self esteem and positive self image which are foundations of one’s quality of life. Exercise in T2DM can be defined as a planned and structured physical activity in order to improve or maintain one or more elements of physical fitness. Despite that the adherence to regular exercise recommendation in T2DM in India is not known. Methods Methodology: Cross-Sectional Observational Study Time Period: June 2014 to September 2014 Sample Size: 200 (Mean Age ± 5.2 years) Data Collection Tools: Interview/Questionnaires Procedure: Results Discussion & Conclusions According to ACSM guidelines, it is recommended that person with T2DM accumulate a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise at least 3 days per week. In T2DM non-medical treatments like diet, exercise and periodic medical monitoring have a fundamental importance. Key factors affecting regular exercise are, Recommendations Strategies should be aimed at overcoming internal as well as external barriers in doing exercise in persons with T2DM.
