Workshop Exercise Your best friend, Natalie, is the CEO of Beautiful Pictures, a privately held movie studio based in Chicago, Illinois. Beautiful Pictures began by making small, arthouse feature films, but it has recently found mainstream success through its films “The Lion, the Witch, and the Lawyer” and “Star Wars IX: Now the Lawyers Awaken” and has brought in $1.5B in revenue for the last two years. This recent growth has opened up the possibility of an IPO within the next twelve months, which in turn has caused Natalie to holistically re-evaluate how Beautiful Pictures deals with its legal issues, risks, and opportunities. Although Natalie practiced law for many years, Beautiful Pictures has never had an in-house attorney and relies exclusively on outside counsel for support, satisfaction with which has been varied (though never formally measured or recorded). Natalie is considered a strong and innovative leader and, in lieu of directly hiring a General Counsel, Natalie has asked you to become her Director of Legal Operations for Beautiful Pictures’ brand new Legal Department. She has asked you: What are your priorities? What can you accomplish within next months? Should she bring in any in-house attorneys, and if so, for what roles? How many FTEs/contractors you might need on your team?
