3. Harvard Referencing Accurate referencing is very important because:
it demonstrates that you have researched or read around the subject which you are writing about
it provides evidence for your arguments
it allows any reader of your work to find the original sources you used
it shows that you are not passing off someone else's research as your own thoughts

4. Examples Harvard Referencing
A book reference A reference for a book should be laid out in the following sequence: Author (Year). Title. Edition, Place of publication, Publisher.
JOHNSON, David W. and JOHNSON, Frank P. (2009). Joining together: group theory and group skills. 10th ed., Boston, Allyn and Bacon.
A web page reference The Harvard referencing system was originally developed for print sources so adapting it for web pages can be tricky but you should aim for something like this: Author/ editor (Year). Title. [online]. Day and month updated or posted (if available) and the URL.

Rational, linear and systematic
States that clients come to therapy for 2 reasons
Problem situations
Not living as fully as they might
How might these reasons impact on clients?

Missed opportunities and unused potential
Purpose of “Skilled Helper”:
Helping them to see or tap into the power they have to question what could be better, it’s about looking from another perspective
“Treatment is not just fixing what is broken, it is nurturing what is best” – Positive Psychology

Crises, troubles, doubts, difficulties, frustration or concerns
Emotional turmoil

Purpose of Skilled Helper:

1. Clarification of the key issues calling for change – What’s going on?
2. Help clients determine outcomes: goals, accomplishments, impact – What does success look like?
3. Helping clients develop strategies for accomplishing goals – How do I get what I need and want?

B) Help clients challenge their blind spots and develop a new strategy
C) Help clients focus on issues that will make a difference

A) What do you want? Help clients develop a range of possibilities for a better future
B) What do you really want? Help clients translate preferred-scenario possibilities into goals
C) What are you willing to pay for what you want? Help clients commit themselves to the goals they choose

A) Help clients brainstorm a range of strategies for accomplishing their goals
B) Help clients choose action strategies that best fit their needs and resources
C) Help clients draw up a plan

16. Let’s have a go! Listening to core messages
Listen very carefully to what the client is saying.
Identify the client’s key experiences, what he she says is happening to him or her.
Identify the client’s key behaviours, what he or she is doing, not doing or failing to do.
Identify the key feelings and emotions associated with these experiences and behaviours.
