Outline for Today Scientific Advisory Council Membership Committees

Scientific Advisory Council
Our Scientific Advisory Council (SAC) of experts provides medical guidance 70+ Medical Experts 8+ Committees We have internists, gerentologists, statisticians, GP’s, radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, nutritionists etc etc. Bound by terms of Reference which stipulates expectations of membership ie furthering Osteoporosis Canada’s cause, participating when asked, allowing OC to depend upon their expertise, contribute annually to OC financially The committees – Executive, Guidelines, Development, Research, KT, COPN Review, Rapid Response and then the subcommittees – KT has four – the core, the Diagnostic Imaging, Family practise, Orthopedics; There are also other committees – Vertebrl Fracture Assessment Guidelines committee, AFF, and committees when we work in partnership with other organizations such as the Canadian Association of Radiologists as we did last year, developing a paper and several articles on wording in identifying fractures

Executive Committee Comprised of 12 medical experts
Chair: Dr. Suzanne Morin Members: Chairs of committees plus other key members Role: advisor and guide to OC’s President/CEO on all technical, scientific and/or medical matters. To act on behalf of the SAC membership, and to make decisions on matters of urgency. This may be subject to later ratification or amendment by some or all of the SAC membership through the most appropriate communication mechanisms. To identify and evaluate emerging internal and external developments of scientific/medical significance, and where indicated, make specific recommendations to the SAC. To develop position statements, in consultation with appropriate SAC consultants, where the absence of guidelines on a research/medical/scientific issue requires a statement from OC in accordance with committee protocols determined by OC (e.g. Rapid Response) To establish and constitute roles of committees to best carry out the functions of the SAC To ensure a member of the Executive Committee serves as an active participant on individual SAC committees as appropriate To give direction, support, and to provide advice and counsel, to the Vice-President, Operations & Clinical Programs Coordinator on technical, scientific and or medical matters of importance to the organization. To safeguard the scientific credibility and integrity of OC To oversee the review and approval of all material prepared for public/professional distribution with respect to scientific and/or medical content. To establish and oversee ongoing annual planning, budgeting and review process of the SAC and its activities and report such progress to OC’s President/CEO. Meet at least 4 times a year via teleconference They review endorsements brought to them by the guidelines committee. Recently endorsed the long term care guidelines from Dr. Papaioannou Topics on their radar include sarcopenia,

Guidelines Committee Comprised of 10 SAC Members, 1 COPN member and Ravi Chair: Dr. Heather McDonald Blumer Role: The Guidelines Committee of the Scientific Advisory Council (SAC) shall assume active leadership, in collaboration with the Executive Committee of the SAC, in its primary role as scientific reviewer and advisor and guide to OC on all technical, scientific and/or medical matters. To review and provide feedback on all research and medical matters related to guideline development To identify and evaluate emerging internal and external developments of scientific/medical significance, and where indicated, make specific recommendations to the SAC, in collaboration with the Executive To ensure that the Chair of the Guidelines Committee serves as an active participant on the Executive as appropriate To give direction, support, and to provide advice and counsel, to the Vice-President, Operations and Clinical Programs Coordinator on technical, scientific and or medical matters of importance to the organization To safeguard the credibility and integrity of OC in terms of guideline development To oversee the review and approval of all material prepared for public/professional distribution with respect to scientific and/or medical content

Research Committee Comprised of 8 experts including a COPN member
Chair: Dr. Wendy Ward Role: The Research Committee of the SAC shall assume primary responsibility for identifying, recommending and funding research opportunities. CaMos Award Tim Murray Travel awards Monitor current status of the OC research fund, ensuring commitments fall within the annual funding budget Identify distribution of funds to support funding options Develop protocol to process and evaluate research applications Recommend peer reviewed research and researchers Develop new researchers in the field of osteoporosis Develop strategies to heighten awareness of osteoporosis research in Canada, including that supported by the OC Research Fund, within the scientific community and to the general public

Development Committee
Comprised of 8 “seasoned” SAC Members Chair: Dr. Alexandra Papaioannou Role: The Development Committee shall assume primary responsibility for ongoing cultivation, recruitment and selection of appropriately qualified candidates for the Scientific Advisory Council, its Executive Committee, Guidelines Committee, and Research Committee To recruit appropriately qualified candidates for SAC Consultants, Executive Committee, Guidelines Committee, and Research Committee To ensure Consultants know and respect the roles and responsibilities of SAC membership To undertake an annual review and assessment of SAC composition to ensure the SAC has a membership with the appropriate mix of capabilities, skills, interests, qualifications and geographic representation To undertake an annual call to the SAC membership requesting intent to continue to serve for a renewable 3-year term To undertake a call for strategic additions to the SAC Consultants, at any time within the year, when medical and/or scientific expertise is required to carry out SAC functions To call for nominations from the SAC membership for the Executive Committee, Guidelines Committee, Research Committee, and additional Consultants following which a slate of candidates will be prepared and voted on by the SAC membership via telecommunications Group recently met to review committee membership – 5 people applied this year and each has been offered membership and am awaiting their response

Subdivided into 4 committees: Core Diagnostic Imaging Family Practitioners Orthopedic Co-chairs: Sandra Kim and Stephanie Kaiser

Rapid Response Team Chair: Aliya Khan
A topic is identified in the media and sent to me, I contact the rapid response team to see if they feel a response is required. I alert the COPn Review Team as well as Matthew If a response is deemed appropriate by the team, it is prepared and posted usually within 48 hours; it is shared with the COPn review committee as they create a consumer response It is then posted and sent to all SAC members Sometimes they will put the topic on a to do list for an article etc if not deemed requiring a response immediately
