Data Virtualization Demoette… Salesforce.com Data Source
Hello, and welcome to the Demoette series for Cisco Information Server, or CIS. Demoettes are brief instructional videos that demonstrate specific features of CIS. In this Demoette, we discuss the use of Salesforce.com as a data source.
2
Agenda What is it and why does it matter? A basic demo Summary
Here is our agenda. We begin by defining Salesforce.com as a data source and outlining its importance for our customers. Next we walk through a very basic demo of setting up a Salesforce.com data source. Finally, we summarize the contents of this demoette.

Agenda What is it and why does it matter? A basic demo Summary
Let’s begin by discussing what a Salesforce.com data source is, and why it is important for our customers.
4
What is it? Salesforce.com Data Source Cloud-resident data
Cost for access Not standard SQL Salesforce.com is an enormously popular enterprise application, but it raises some data issues for customers. First, since the data resides in the cloud, it can be challenging to integrate it with other enterprise data. Second, Salesforce charges its customers for data access, so traditional ETL movement of full data sets can be prohibitively costly. Third, Salesforce data is not accessible via standard SQL, which raises additional integration challenges.
5
Why does it matter? Salesforce.com Data Source
Make cloud data available for enterprise integration Lower costs by accessing only needed data Make data available in standard SQL format The CIS Salesforce adapter is important to our customers for three reasons. First, it makes Salesforce’s cloud-based data available for integration with other enterprise data. Second, it can lower total cost of ownership for Salesforce.com, because only data that is actually needed will be retrieved. Finally, the adapter makes Salesforce data available in standard SQL format, so that it can easily be federated with other enterprise data.

Agenda What is it and why does it matter? A basic demo Summary
Next, let’s walk through a very basic demo of using the CIS Salesforce adapter.

Demo: Here is the business problem…
CIS Here is the business problem we illustrate in this demo. Our business analysts need federated views that include data from Salesforce.com. The Salesforce data must be put into standard SQL format so it can be joined with other relational data from the enterprise.
8
Demo: Before you begin In this demoette we concentrate on the needs of a Systems Engineer or Developer who needs to set up a Salesforce environment for testing purposes. To begin, go to and go through the steps to obtain a free developer environment. You will receive account details via .
9
Demo: Before you begin Once your account is set up, you will need to create a security token. When appended to your password, the security token will enable you to access the Salesforce test system from any IP address. Go to the account link that you received by when you set up the account. Click My Settings. <CLICK> Type “security” in the Quick Find box… <CLICK> …then click Reset My Security Token. The token will be ed to you.
10
Demo: Create the Adapter in CIS
In CIS Studio, create a new adapter, selecting Salesforce.com. <CLICK> Enter your user name and password. Then append your Security Token to the password. <CLICK> Click Create and Introspect.
11
Demo: Introspect Salesforce.com
The introspection process shows all available Salesforce resources, and you may select any that you find interesting. Recommended all-purpose tables include Account, Contact, and User.
12
Demo: View the Salesforce.com Data
The selected tables now appear in the Studio namespace. <CLICK> You can open the tables, view the data, and join it with other resources, just as with any CIS resource. Our demo is complete.

Agenda What is it and why does it matter? A basic demo Summary
Let’s summarize what we have seen in this presentation.
