1 Bloom Taxonomy Hamburger Analogy

2 First of all... What is bloom and what is a taxonomy?
I am sure you are all wondering, “What in the world is a bloom and what is a taxonomy?”

3 Benjamin Bloom is the person who invented Bloom’s Taxonomy
Benjamin Bloom is the person who invented Bloom’s Taxonomy. He was born in Pennsylvania. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Master’s of Science degree, and a Ph.D. He was a researcher and a college professor. He is known for creating “Bloom’s Taxonomy”. Read slide and discuss

4 A Taxonomy is a classification system
Talk about how we classify items on a daily basis….laundry, for instance. Categories of colors, who it belongs to, what type of clothing it is, etc.

5 Mr. Bloom found that over 95% of the activities students encounter require them to think only at the lowest possible level, which is the recall of information. Read and discuss…..”How many times have you had to write down the definition of a vocabulary word?” Go on to tell the students that finding a definition is an important exercise, but it is low level thinking. However, we have to know the basics to take it further!

6 Mr. Bloom was not happy at all about this
Mr. Bloom was not happy at all about this. He decided that we can all think at different levels. So Bloom headed a committee of professors decided to develop levels of thinking. These levels are important in the process of learning. This way, students could challenge themselves to continuously think at higher levels than they did before. Read and discuss Macias 2013

7 Bloom's Taxonomy Created in 1956
Under the leadership of Dr Benjamin Bloom T To promote higher forms of thinking in education, such as analyzing and evaluating concepts, processes, procedures, and principles, rather than just remembering facts (rote learning)

8

9 Knowledge Observation and recall of information
Knowledge of dates, events, and places Verbs: list, define, tell, describe, identify, show, label, collect, name, who, when, where, why, etc. Discuss and compare assignments students have done that are “knowledge based”.

10 Describe a Hamburger…

11 Comprehension Understanding information Grasp meaning
Interpreting facts Verbs: summarize, describe, interpret, put in order, explain, etc. Discuss examples you have done in class!

12 Why do we eat Hamburgers?

13 Application (Applying)
Use information in another familiar situation Solve problems using required skills or knowledge Verbs: implementing, carrying out, using, executing Discuss examples you have done in class!

14 Describe different types of Hamburgers?

15 Analysis (Analyzing) See patterns Organize the parts
Recognize hidden meanings Verbs: Comparing, organizing, analyzing, separating, ordering, connecting, classifying, arrange, examining, deconstructing Discuss examples you have done in class! Macias 2013

16 Categorize different types of Hamburgers?

17 Synthesis (Creating) Use old ideas to create new ones
Relate knowledge from several areas Verbs: creating, designing, finding an unusual way, inventing, designing, constructing Discuss examples you have done in class! This is where the creating takes place! Macias 2013

18 Design a special Hamburgers you would like to eat.

19 Evaluation (Evaluating)
Compare and discriminate ideas Assess the value of theories Make choices based on reasoned argument Verify the value of evidence Verbs: defend, evaluate, judge, give your opinion, rank, justify Why do you think there is a picture of a magnifying glass? We are looking closely at our work- evaluating it, ranking it, determining the value, etc. Discuss when students have maybe thought on this level Macias 2013

20 Critique your new Hamburger. Would people want to try it
Critique your new Hamburger. Would people want to try it? Would people order it?

21 Now try with your SHOES

22 Bloom’s Taxonomy Knowledge Look at your shoe and describe it.
Comprehension Application Analysis Synthesis Evaluation Look at your shoe and describe it. Tell why we wear shoes. Describe different types of shoes Categorized shoes in the classroom. How could we group them? Design a special shoe you would like to wear. Critique your shoe design. Is it practical? Would others like to wear it?
