2 PED Tool: Performance, Expectation, Deadline
The PED is a tool that helps ensure that manager and direct report are on the same page about tasks and projects. It works best on a short-term basis (e.g. weekly). Here’s a common scenario that occurs without any sort of clarifying tool or practice: “Complete that analysis and get it to me as soon as you can.” Sure thing! MANAGER DIRECT REPORT If I get the analysis tomorrow, then I can put in my pieces Wednesday and be ready for the board meeting Thursday. Since I’ve got this other thing I’m working on now, I’ll take a first cut of the analysis Wed afternoon, put finishing touches on Thursday morning and send over to her Thursday end of day.

3 How can a PED help clarify expectations?
PRIORITY EXPECTATION DEADLINE THE WHAT: overall description of the task, with a numerical priority level THE HOW: clarifying information about the deliverable - what format? To what level of detail? Etc. THE WHEN: Date and time specific Don’t be afraid to re-order the priority list if it’s not correct. Encourage your staff to think, “is this the right thing, right time, right intensity, right pace?” as they put their list in order. Be very specific! Do you want to see a draft before the final version? Do you want a 10-page word document or a 3-page ppt slide deck? Ask your staff to mirror back the expectation if you are worried they aren’t on the same page. Give both a date and a time deadline so that it’s easy to see if the deadline has been achieved or missed. Consider sharing the impact of that deadline on the big picture as an extra motivator. PRIORITY EXPECTATION DEADLINE 1 Schedule EPIC eval training for new LC members Find a date before June 15 that 90% of members can attend Friday, May 23, noon 2 Analysis of contract infractions by LC for past 3 cycles Excel spreadsheet with visual graphs embedded Tuesday, May 27, 5pm
