Discussion #2 Overview: Looking in the Mirror
Root Causes Addressed: Toxic Masculinity Force / Coercion Learning Objectives: Identify and analyze societal expectations of gender. Consider how these expectations shape personal behaviors. Evaluate how gender norms impact intervention or consent. Apply lessons from the Relationship 101 Symposium with discussions from Social Module CCDP. Self Reflection

Discussion #2 Overview: Looking in the Mirror
Facilitator Guide Part 1: Unpacking society’s definition of what it means to be you. Part 2: How the societal image of gender can, and sometimes does, lead to sexual violence. Part 3: Personal Application of Relationship 101 experience, today’s topics, and previous Social Module discussions. Key Take-Aways: The messages we receive from society, our culture, our family and friends shape the way we see ourselves and others. Expectations established by gender norms influence our thoughts and behaviors. They can become ‘toxic’ if they don’t align with our values and ethics or cause destructive or unhealthy behaviors. When behaviors and language that perpetuates toxic norms occur, and when they go unaddressed, we accept the culture versus changing it. We need to look for opportunities to affect positive and tangible change. In a healthy relationship, partners respect each other. Understanding and communicating expectations and boundaries is an important aspect of healthy relations.
