3 VERB-DEFINED Verbs name an action or a state of being.

4 ACTION VERBS Action verbs state the action
that the subject of the sentence is doing. Action verbs tell “what is being done” in the sentence. The action can be physical or mental.

5 ACTION VERBS EXAMPLES: My horse walked slowly along.
past tense EXAMPLES: My horse walked slowly along. A sports car roared past us. The squirrel chattered noisily. Ben usually mows the lawn. Caroline finished her homework. present tense

6 HELPING VERBS Helping verbs “help” the main
verb explain the action in the sentence. They give the sentence a more exact meaning. Memorize these!

8 HELPING VERBS HELPING MAIN EXAMPLES:
My horse was walking slowly along. A sports car should roar past us. The squirrel has chattered noisily. Ben usually will mow the lawn. Caroline could finish her homework.

9 LINKING VERBS Linking verbs stand alone and
“link” the subject of the sentence to a noun or adjective in the predicate of the sentence. They help tell about the subject.

10 LINKING VERBS My horse is slow. A sports car was near us.
EXAMPLES: My horse is slow. A sports car was near us. The wolves were noisy. Ben usually is outside. She is done with her homework.

11 VERB PRACTICE (1) IDENTIFY THE COMPLETE VERB:
Grant has won the election for student body president. Our ship will be sailing early in the morning. Have your cousins arrived from Chicago?

12 VERB PRACTICE (2) IDENTIFY THE COMPLETE VERB:
Why shouldn’t Jill answer the question? Mitch usually doesn’t drive very fast. Kenny was being teased by his big brother.

13 VERB PRACTICE (3) IDENTIFY THE COMPLETE VERB: This bill must be paid.
Could he have gone with us to the beach? For once John arrived early.

14 VERB PRACTICE (4) IDENTIFY THE COMPLETE VERB: They are playing chess.
Bob tries. He has had many successes.

15 VERB PRACTICE (5) IDENTIFY THE COMPLETE VERB:
Did anyone run faster than Joe? Susie should have slept. Mr. Bracey strolled into the room, went to his seat, and sat down.
