IAXO experiment reminder
Next generation “axion helioscope” after CAST Purpose-built large-scale magnet >300 times larger B2L2A than CAST magnet Toroid geometry 8 conversion bores of 60 cm Ø, ~20 m long Detection systems (XRT+detectors) Scaled-up versions based on experience in CAST Low-background techniques for detectors Optics based on slumped-glass technique used in NuStar ~50% Sun-tracking time Large magnetic volume available for additional “axion” physics (e.g. DM setups) IAXO conceptual design IAXO pathfinder system at CAST In operation in Last CAST results to be soon publisehd (under review by Nature Physics) Beyond Colliders, CERN, March-17 Igor G. IAXO physics update IAXO physics case has been considerably sharpened in the last years IAXO is now an established concept often referred to by papers by theorists/phenomenologists “IAXO physics potential” long paper under preparation by the collaboration IAXO is the only technique able to explore this region of the axion/ALP parameter space An ALP miracle? IAXO status of project 2011: First studies concluded (JCAP 1106:013,2011) 2013: Conceptual Design finished (arXiv: ) and LoI to CERN SPSC [CERN-SPSC ] 2014: Positive recommendations from SPSC. : Transition phase towards TDR (technical design) Engaging funding agencies Community meetings in many countries Preparatory activities (IAXO pathfinder system at CAST) Preparation of collaboration bylaws and MoU to carry out TDR work. First discussions on experimental site options First discussion on long-term plan to build full experiment 2017: Formal constitution of collaboration (expected for summer) “Founding” IAXO collaboration meeting to happen 3-4 July 2017, DESY Beyond Colliders, CERN, March-17 Igor G. Irastorza / Universidad de Zaragoza

IAXO near-term milestones
Secure funding for TDR activities Some funding already obtained, several other application under review or to be submitted (see next slide). Important funding roadmap in the next months Mini-IAXO concept under study at the moment: will impact TDR plans Define longer-term stage to construction DESY agreed to study technically viable places to site IAXO at DESY Next (“founding”) collaboration meeting to happen at DESY (3-4 July) Consolidate and formally establish collaboration Interim steering committee working for a few months to establish collaboration Bylaws document produced and MoU under preparation To be signed in the collaboration “founding” meeting next July Beyond Colliders, CERN, March-17 Igor G. Irastorza / Universidad de Zaragoza

IAXO TDR baseline plans
IAXO-T0: demonstration coil magnet IAXO-X0: prototype x-ray optics IAXO-D0: prototype low background detector setup testing different technologies for detector Studies to refine IAXO physics case Additional physics potential (DM options) Site studies Structure collaboration IAXO-D0 Micromegas IAXO-T0 IAXO-X0 Beyond Colliders, CERN, March-17 Igor G. Extended TDR (Mini-IAXO / BabyIAXO concept)
Alternative magnet designs Pros: higher FOM with less conductor, modularity Cons: higher risk need intermediate demonstrating magnet prototype BabyIAXO concept: Test magnet design at relevant scale (only 1 bore full diameter) Test bench for optics + detector Will deliver relevant physics (at intermediate level) Will better mobilize community & increase interest Better (and more staged) access to funding Effect on near-term planning under study Single 60-cm bore Several conductor configurations under consideration Beyond Colliders, CERN, March-17 Igor G. Irastorza / Universidad de Zaragoza

IAXO and CERN IAXO magnet makes use of unique expertise of CERN in the development of large escale (“detector”) superconducting magnets CERN detector magnet group (H. ten Kate) already involved in CDR magnet work. CERN support is critical in the design (TDR) and construction of the IAXO magnet. Update request will be submitted, within new context put by the possible DESY site + mini-IAXO concept.
