6. Pyrolysis
Pyrolysis is a thermochemical decomposition of organic material at elevated temperatures in the absence of oxygen. First, the steel component of tires gets extracted so that the output from the shredder (granulation process) is metal free. Then, in a reactor, the pyrolysis process turns the granulate into three substances which can be used for generating energy.

8. Pyrolysis Components
Pyrolysis Oil
A liquid fuel with high calorific value comparable to light fuel oil. It can be used as heating oil and (after distillation) also in diesel engines to produce electricity.
Pyrolysis Gas
After being cleaned of any particulates and tar, some portion gets used in the pyrolysis process heating and the rest gets converted into electric energy (gas motor, gas turbine).
Carbon Black
Containing higher ash than commercial carbon black produced from petroleum products. Ash can be reduced by further processing, which is subject to additional cost.
