1
What type of wave is this?
Transverse
2
What causes the glass to break?
3
State the link between loudness and amplitude
Loudness and pitch Success Criteria Today you will: State the link between loudness and amplitude Describe how the range of human hearing is different to that of animals Compare and contrast waves with different loudness and frequency using diagrams
4
Detecting sound An oscilloscope can be used to see sound waves.
5
Different sounds Look at the trace on the oscilloscope: What happens when you change the amplitude of the wave? Increasing the amplitude makes the sound louder.
6
State the link between loudness and amplitude
Loudness and pitch Success Criteria Today you will: State the link between loudness and amplitude Describe how the range of human hearing is different to that of animals Compare and contrast waves with different loudness and frequency using diagrams
7
Different sounds Look at the trace on the oscilloscope: How do these sound different? The number of waves that pass a point each second is called the frequency. Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz) 1 Hz = 1 wave passing 4 Hz 8 Hz 16 Hz
8
Hearing ranges Do you know any animals that hear differently to humans?
9
Hearing ranges
10
Hearing ranges Name the animal that can hear the highest sounds.
Name the animal that can hear the lowest sounds. Name the animal that can make the loudest sounds. Name all the animals that can hear sounds too high for humans to hear.
11
State the link between loudness and amplitude
Loudness and pitch Success Criteria Today you will: State the link between loudness and amplitude Describe how the range of human hearing is different to that of animals Compare and contrast waves with different loudness and frequency using diagrams
12
Changing waves Draw a diagram of a quiet wave with a frequency of 3 Hz
Draw a diagram of a wave with the same frequency but two times louder Draw a diagram of a wave of the same volume but twice the frequency
13
State the link between loudness and amplitude
Loudness and pitch Success Criteria Today you will: State the link between loudness and amplitude Describe how the range of human hearing is different to that of animals Compare and contrast waves with different loudness and frequency using diagrams
14
Challenge your neighbour!
Draw a wave on your whiteboard but don’t show it to the person next to you Describe your wave to your neighbour using the key words from today’s lesson Amplitude loudness frequency Hertz pitch Compare your wave diagrams and see how close you are…
