2 Began JSTOR Contributions in 2009
Since 2009, the SDSU Library has contributed 91 journal titles (several hundred volumes) to JSTOR to be scanned. Six of these were in Spanish. JSTOR Collection Development group determines which titles will be digitized and JSTOR issues acquisitions is responsible for obtaining volumes from libraries or publishers. Publishers may choose to add current content to JSTOR and then backfiles will be added.

3 Example: Trimestre Economico

5 Workflow JSTOR Requests volumes. SDSU sends volumes to JSTOR.
JSTOR scans volumes. JSTOR returns volumes to SDSU or hosts volumes in “dark archive.” Volumes make the trip to Michigan and Chennai.

6 Transformation of Data
Article-level metadata is added. Open-URL Linking enabled (“Find Full-Text” links from Google Scholar and other sources). COUNTER usage reporting available. Trimestre Economico saw 12 uses in (2 HTML, 10 PDF)

7 Downsides? Students may not realize they can access these articles for free and they may pay for them. JSTOR could raise prices. Maintenance of digital formats can be expensive and labor intensive. Some binding gets destroyed during the digitization process. Article found through Google Scholar (not logged in through my Institution).
