1 Mine fire due to improper stowing in underground mines
Utilization of OB Dump Material for Backfilling in Underground Mine Voids : A Sustainable Waste Management Approach Anup Kumar Gupta, Biswajit Paul Department of Environmental Science & Engineering, Indian School of . Mines, Dhanbad , Contd. INTRODUCTION Backfilling is a mandatory and integral part of mining. Mine fire due to improper stowing in underground mines Underground mining has some advantages over opencast mining thus frequently used from last few decades. River sand is widely used material for underground mine backfilling due to its availability in adequate amount but now it’s going to be scarce resource thus mines are probably left without backfilling. These may cause different environmental problems as land subsidence, mine fire, reduction in production etc. Thus there is a need of an alternative of sand that is easily available and cost effective. Coal mine overburden might be used as for the same. It needs some physical and geotechnical analysis that confirms its suitability as stowing material STUDY AREA Backfilling is one of the most important parts of underground mining. At present river sand is widely used material for stowing but as the demand increases there is pressure on mining industry to search an alternative of sand because sand resources are limited and there are possible negative impacts on river ecosystem and nearby land system with their exploitation. Different materials have been analyzed to check the suitability of backfilling as Fly ash, Mine tailings and Overburden dump. Overburden dump which is generated in a huge mass during opencast mining which is shelf causing different environmental problems (land pollution, air and water pollution), might be good alternative of sand . Land subsidence due to infilling of underground mine Air Pollution Due to Burning of Oxides of Carbon and Sulfur from overburden dump DISCUSSION OBJECTIVE To provide an alternative of river sand as stowing material. METHODOLOGY Identification and collection of overburden dump material Geotechnical and Physical investigation Comparative analysis of river sand and overburden Preparation of sand like material from overburden material Analysis for rheological properties to check the flow-ability parameters To design an techno-economic system for slurry flow Experimental analysis to be done- Physical analysis viz. Specific Gravity analysis, Bulk density, Porosity and Grain Size distribution Geotechnical analysis viz. Triaxial test, Compaction test, Consolidation test, Water percolation characteristics, Settlement characteristics, Compressibility characteristics REFERENCES Barapanda P., Singh S.
