1
Scintillating Fiber/Clear Fiber QA and Ribbon Production
Alan Bross MICE Tracker Meeting 大坂
2
Mirror QA As you know there was concern that the reflectivity measured for the MICE 350 micron diameter 3HF fibers was lower than expected. We have now done a complete set of tests, and no “smoking-gun” as been found, nor has any “tweak” to the process produced fibers with significantly higher QE
3
Fiber-Mirror QC Setup
4
R Measurement The measurement is really quite simple
A sample fiber is excited with a 405 nm pulsed (100 Hz) LED about 2 cm from the mirror. The Signal is measured by PD1 The excitation LED amplitude is monitored by a second PD – PD2 A lock-in amp (locked into 100 Hz) measures PD1/PD2 Two measurements are made S1 – with mirror S2 – with mirror cut off and end of fiber painted black Then R is just S1/S2-1

Fiber Mirroring – Production Status
Fibers cut in half 26,650 of 37,500 fibers provided by Kuraray Fibers (~50cmL) polished and quality checked 29,500 - 61 polish operations (.8% rejected fibers) Fibers stuffed into hex pipes and frozen ready to be polished 6,000 -12 polish operations 11 Sputtering groups have been coated 8,090 fibers (.75% rejected fibers) and packaged/labeled for transport along with extra packaging for reflectivity test fibers 20 Sputtering groups have been assembled into levels (17,090 fibers), of which 15 sputtering groups have been stacked and prepped for vacuum installation (12,090 fibers)
6
Waveguide Fiber QC Nothing has happened Fibers still in box
This is a problem Will take some additional manpower It is a tedious measurement I’m not sure when we will be able to get to this
7
Ribbon Layup Two ribbon Layup stations have been prepared with new molds

Ribbon Fabrication Schedule
We are planning to start production fabrication August 14th We will make 5 ribbons and then stop (Assuming 2 weeks to get these first 5 done). Ship these to IC and when they give the OK, we will start up again. The goal is to make 1 ribbon/day in production Manpower Fermilab Bob Kabinski Rolando Flores Wanda Newby UCLA Xiaofeng Yang (August 23rd for a week) Others ???? We will need additional help to maintain a 1 ribbon/day production schedule

Ribbon Production Issues
There is only one – identification of center fiber All other procedures will remain the same as for prototype Channel 214 Channel 1 Channel 107 Channel 108 Channel 212 Channel 106 View from end of chuck looking at the connector end of the fibre ribbon Chuck with numbering for planes ‘V’ & ‘W’ Chuck with numbering for planes ‘X’ Mylar Centre Fibre
