Governance refers to the set of: Processes Customs Policies Laws …. affecting the way an organization is directed, administered or controlled Organization = Credit Union

Governance also includes the relationships among the many stakeholders involved and the goals for which the Credit Union is governed. Stakeholders Include: Members Boards Committees Employees Regulators Creditors Others

Governance is a multi faceted subject and speaks directly to the Credit Union’s culture. Good Governance is not ad-hoc An Important theme of governance is to ensure the accountability of certain individuals in the Credit Union through mechanisms of transparency It is the result of deliberate policies and procedures designed to inculcate values

Good Governance is also reliant on external marketplace factors and legislation that is enabling, while promoting safety and soundness In addition to accountability, Good Governance requires management activities with good “business savvy”, objectivity and integrity. Compliance with safe and sound practices and legislation then become facets of Good Governance

The objective of Good Governance is ultimately to strengthen the Credit Union for the benefit of its Members’ Welfare In this context, Good Governance is a tool for Socio-economic development; which is the ultimate goal of all members owned organizations; especially Credit Unions. External Stakeholders like Regulators and Governments must be cognizant of this goal.
