Why Improvement? Betsan's Story
No on sets out to cause harm. We know that everyone who works for the NHS tries to do their very best- it is not malice or negligence, or poor personal standards or even a lack of knowledge or skills. Lapses in care are inevitable when you’re working under pressure in a complex system with human limitations. Unfortunately though, as you’ll see/ have seen, things don’t go the way they should. More than one in ten people admitted to hospital are harmed unintentionally by its care, and there is a one in 300 chance of accidental death through errors in care. And it’s thought that 50% of these errors are avoidable. 1000 Lives Improvement Student and Educator Community

1000 Lives Improvement Service
The 1000 Lives Campaign was launched in This was based on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s 100,000 Lives Campaign in the US, and covered many of the same clinical interventions as The Health Foundation’s Safer Patients Initiative. This campaign was launched with, unsurprisingly, the goal of saving 1000 additional lives, and ran for two years. In 2010, 1000 Lives Plus was established as a national programme, involving all of the new NHS Wales health boards, who were set the goal of reducing mortality by 10% across the board. And now, we are in the process of becoming 1000 Lives Improvement Service. Our aim is to support NHS Wales to increase its capability to deliver improved health, healthcare outcomes, and user experience. And the Student and Educator Community is a big part of this- so that’s where you come in... 1000 Lives Improvement Student and Educator Community

Improving Quality Together
A big part of the work 1000 Lives Improvement Service is currently doing is Improving Quality Together, or IQT. This was launched in in fact this week marks the year anniversary of the launch. IQT is a national framework of improvement skills used by NHS Wales, which helps staff to understand systems, identify changes, set aims, test changes, then spread improvements. The idea is that IQT training provides staff with the knowledge and expertise to continue improving services to make them as safe and efficient as possible. There are three levels- Bronze, Silver, and Gold, and staff all across NHS Wales are being encouraged to do this training. So far, nearly 6000 members of staff have completed their IQT Bronze training- and students are also invited to undertake their Bronze training while studying. This puts you a step ahead of the game, and helps you understand the common language of improvement. Insert name of presentation on Master Slide

Recent Activity Students Transforming Patient Care Competitions
London 2013 Paris 2014 IHI National Forum, Orlando Ask One Question Interprofessional Stroke Innovation Group So what do we actually do? We support students will all sorts of improvement projects, and we then encourage students to submit these projects for our competitions. In 2012 and 2013 we held Students Transforming Patient Care competitions- the prize was travel, accommodation and entry to the International Forum on Improving Quality and Safety, which was held in London in 2013, and this year three students will be heading to Paris. We also supported several students from Cardiff University with bursaries so they could attend the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s National Forum in Orlando, Florida in December 2013, where they were presenting posters, including one on their “Ask One Question” work. This is an initiative where students ask patients in hospital “What can I do to improve your stay?”- including a special evening event they are hosting on 17th March to celebrate the work they have done so far. We also support the work of the Interprofessional Stroke Innovation Group, which is a collaboration between chapters at Cardiff Met and Cardiff University who come together to discuss ways to improve the quality of care for people who have had a stroke and the roles of different health and care professionals in this field. So there’s plenty of ways to get involved! Insert name of presentation on Master Slide

Coming Soon... Hospital Acquired Thrombosis campaign
“Hello, my name is...”- Launching April 2014 National Learning Event- 12th June 2014 A Day In The Life Of – Launching June 2014 We’ve got lots of new campaigns coming up over the next few months which you can get involved in. If any of these are sounding interesting to you- make sure you get your name and address on the sign up sheet, and like our Facebook page- all the details will be coming out soon! For example, a new national campaign will be launching soon, relating to Hospital Acquired Thrombosis- did you know that you’re more likely to get thrombosis in hospital than you are on a long haul flight, for example? We’re hoping that students will be a big part of this awareness raising project. “Hello, my name is...” is a piece of work started by Kate Granger, a doctor who is undergoing treatment for cancer and who found that all too often, healthcare professionals weren’t introducing themselves before starting a procedure. We’ll be running a student-led campaign starting in April encouraging all students to pledge to start all interactions with patients with “Hello, my name is...”. We also have another of our National Learning Events coming up on 12th June in Llandudno. We run National Learning Events twice a year- in June and November- and these are great opportunities to hear about improvement works which have been going on, learn about improving quality, and network with other students and representatives from Health Boards across Wales- your potential future employers. We will also be running a “Day In The Life Of” photo competition in June- students will be encouraged to send us a picture which sums up their life on placement, which could then be used in 1000 Lives publicity, and the best ones will be in with a shot of being shown all around the National Learning Event in June! We’re also always happy to help support any students with great ideas- like the Cardiff students and their work on “Ask One Question”- so if you’ve got a idea you’d like support with, please just give us a shout! You never know, this year, it could be you presenting in Orlando! 1000 Lives Improvement Student and Educator Community

What Can You Do This Week?
And there are loads of other ways you can get involved straight away! One of the main things we support universities with is encouraging students to complete IQT Bronze training. IQT Bronze is something all staff working for the NHS in Wales are encouraged to do- so completing this while you’re still at university will put you a step ahead of the game! We can also to support you to set up an IHI Open School Chapter- this will give you the opportunity to network with students all over the world, and become part of a much larger quality improvement movement. You can also get access to the IHI Open School online training courses, which are great- they include everything from the Fundamentals of Patient Safety, to The Human Side of Quality Improvement and Basic Skills for Conversations about End of Life Care. You can also contribute to the 1000 Lives Improvement Service blog, Facebook page, and e-Newsletter- we really like sharing your improvement stories and celebrate your successes, so if you’re doing something great- we want to know!
