The media and the war. DORA included the media in its powers:
Censorship of the press; material had to be approved by the government before publication. Restriction of freedom of information – talk about naval or military matters in public. Restrictions on communications, e.g. telegraph, radio etc. BBC - History - British History in depth: Mass Politics and the Western Front

The Battle of the Somme Think about these points as you watch the extracts The use of the media by the government. What did the government hope to achieve? Successes and failures? The National Archives | Focus on Film | | The Great War

You have a choice between: Ypres The Battle of the Somme Read the extracts taken from the Daily Mirror Create a bullet point list of the main FACTS Research the actual events being written about and compare the reality and the version in the news. What are the differences and why do you think they are different? Use this lesson and your homework time to summarise the impact of government intervention on the media in WW1.
