Sentences & Sentence Fragments

Two parts to every sentence—a subject and a predicate.

Subject part—names whom or what the sentence is about.
Predicate part—tells what the subject does or has. It can also describe what the subject is or is like.

Example: Emily Dickinson wrote poetry. subject part predicate part

Sentence fragment—a group of words that does not express a complete thought. It may also be missing a subject, predicate, or both.

Examples: Lush forests. Lacks a predicate. On the third shelf. Lacks a subject and a predicate.

Practice: The sunset is beautiful today. A large, red dog. You seem happy today. Practices every morning.

Lived there all his life.
The tall, thin boy is my cousin. John washed his car. The story of a dog.
