2 What is a complete sentence?
A complete sentence must have three things. At least one subject At least one verb Express a complete thought Example: The referee blew his whistle after he saw the foul.

3 What is a fragment? A fragment is when a sentence is missing at least one of those three things. Sentence fragment that lacks a subject Helped Jim wash the car. Sentence fragment that lacks a verb or part of the verb Jenny swimming in the lake. Sentence fragment that lacks a complete thought As long as you understand my problem.

4 Understood Subject Do not confuse a sentence with an understood subject with an incomplete sentence. An understood subject is when the subject of a request or command is not stated but understood to be “you.” Put the dirty dishes in the sink = (You) put the dishes in the sink.
