Genres and Literature When you speak about genre and literature, genre means a category, or kind of story.

All categories of books or stories can be called either fiction or non-fiction.
a made up story is read for fun characters may be like real people or imaginary Non-Fiction has facts that can be checked and proven the author is an expert on this information it is true!

There are many categories of stories and books
Genre There are many categories of stories and books Here are some of the common ones: cook books “How to” books animal books folktales fantasy mystery poetry biography

Realistic Fiction It can be based on a real story
The characters act like real people The main character tries to solve a problem. The story could happen in real life. Some events are historically accurate. The characters’ feelings and behaviors are like real life.

Fantasy Animal characters may act like people.
The characters may have special powers. The characters may be imaginary beings. The setting may be in another time (future or past). - usually has a good vs. evil conflict - may use scientific principles not yet available or discovered

Poetry page format may look different than other books
may have rhythm (beat) may rhyme imaginative and creative uses descriptive or exciting words tells a story in verse

Informational It provides facts that can be checked or proven.
It may have maps, diagrams and illustrations to explain the facts. The author is an expert on the subject.

Traditional Literature
tells about the great deeds of a person who may have lived may exaggerate a person’s bravery or powers often a long ago setting The story may be considered a part of the history and culture of a group of people. Magic may be used to solve a problem. A lesson can be learned from the story.

Mystery Everything in the story revolves around a puzzle or an unusual problem to solve. The author drops hints that might help the reader solve the mystery. There might be distractions in story to lead the reader away from the correct solution. The story ends with a credible, realistic solution to the mystery.

Science Fiction Science fiction books usually tell about science, technology, and the future. These stories include scientific fact and fiction.

Historical Fiction A novel set among actual events or a specific period of history. Some of the people or places in the story may have existed in the past.

Drama written to be performed by actors
divided into separate parts called acts The acts are divided into scenes. EX: Shakespeare’s plays

Biography & Autobiography
A biography is a story written about the life of another person. An autobiography is a personal story written about one’s own life.
