Happy Computer Science Education Week!
By 2020, it is estimated that one million computer science jobs will go unfilled because there are not enough students graduating with the right technical skills. But there’s a way you can help. Code.org is teaming up with Skype in the classroom to help introduce students to articulate and passionate technology professionals around the world. We want to give teachers and educators a better understanding of the various jobs available in the tech industry. If you’re one of the 100 million participating in Hour of Code this week, inviting a CS Guest Speaker into your classroom is a great way to extend the conversation beyond Computer Science Education Week, and bring a computer science career to life for your students. Check it out here: Here are a few comments on the program so far: From a student in Lebanon, Missouri… From a teacher in Clarion, Iowa… I think today's conversation was spectacular. Here's why: these students were able to network with someone that works for an organization that they idolize. And you are a real person that had a very real, non-scripted, conversation. From the "Why did you name the XBox One..." to "How do you feel about the Seahawks this year?" In my world, this was their first real 'networking' experience, and you brought that all home by your ending statements about attitude and just being a solid person because it all works out in the end. These are the experiences that students need in the classroom and I love providing them.

Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide: they not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. Remember, you can always send feedback to the Bing in the Classroom team at You can learn more about the program at bing.com/classroom and follow the daily lessons on our Partners In Learning site. Want to extend today’s lesson? Consider using Skype in the Classroom to arrange for your class to chat with another class in today’s location. And if you are using Windows 8, you can also use the Bing apps to learn more about this location and topic; the Travel and News apps in particular make great teaching tools. Ja'Dell Davis is a Los Angeles native who currently divides her time between New York City and Madison, Wisconsin. She is currently a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, pursing a PhD in Sociology. Ja’Dell previously taught high school in Philadelphia public schools, and implemented college access and academic enrichment programming in Chester, Pennsylvania and New York City in Manhattan’s Lower East Side neighborhood. Ja’Dell received her B.A. from Swarthmore College with a special major in History and Educational Studies, and a minor in Black Studies. She completed her M.S.Ed in Secondary School Education at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to her studies and work in the education field, Ja’Dell is a dancer, musician, avid people watcher, and Scrabble enthusiast. This lesson is designed to teach the Common Core State Standard: The Number System and Ratios &Proportional Relationships CCSS.Math.Content.6.NS.B.2Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. CCSS.Math.Content.6.NS.B.3Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation. CCSS.Math.Content.6.RP.A.3.dUse ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.

If the length of the Zêzere River ran evenly between the villages through which the river runs, what length of the river would be in each village? © Joel Santos/Corbis Having this up as kids come in is a great settle down activity. You can start class by asking them for thoughts about the picture or about ideas on how they could solve the question of the day.

If the length of the Zêzere River ran evenly between the villages through which the river runs, what length of the river would be in each village? Covão da Ametade was once a glacial lake in the Serra da Estreala (Star Mountains) of Portugal. Over time, sediment filled in the lake and it became a picturesque basin in the range. These days, the Zêzere River winds through the area, marked by its tree-lined banks. With recreation areas and hostels close by, this stretch of the Zêzere is often photographed by visitors. Depending on time, you can either have students read this silently to themselves, have one of them read out loud, or read it out loud yourself.

If the length of the Zêzere River ran evenly between the villages through which the river runs, what length of the river would be in each village? 1 Map Search Find the Zêzere River on a map. 2 Web Search How long is the Zêzere River? 3 Through how many villages does the Zêzere River run? Name them. 4 Thinking Describe the process you would use in order to determine how the Zêzere River would run between these villages. 5 Caluculate the length of the river that would be in each village. There are a couple of ways to use this slide, depending on how much technology you have in your classroom. You can have students find answers on their own, divide them into teams to have them do all the questions competitively, or have each team find the answer to a different question and then come back together. If you’re doing teams, it is often wise to assign them roles (one person typing, one person who is in charge of sharing back the answer, etc.)

If the length of the Zêzere River ran evenly between the villages through which the river runs, what length of the river would be in each village? 5 Minutes You can adjust this based on how much time you want to give kids. If a group isn’t able to answer in 5 minutes, you can give them the opportunity to update at the end of class or extend time.

You can ask the students verbally or let one of them come up and insert the answer or show how they got it. This way, you also have a record that you can keep as a class and share with parents, others.

If the length of the Zêzere River ran evenly between the villages through which the river runs, what length of the river would be in each village? 1 Map Search Find the Zêzere River on a map. Using the “maps” link on the Bing search page, and the search term “Zezere River”, find the location here: Zoom out in order to see the full length in relation to the country’s location.

If the length of the Zêzere River ran evenly between the villages through which the river runs, what length of the river would be in each village? 4 Thinking Describe the process you would use in order to determine how the Zêzere River would run between these villages. Students should describe the process of division, elaborating on the need to divide the length of the river by the number of villages through which the river runs

If the length of the Zêzere River ran evenly between the villages through which the river runs, what length of the river would be in each village? 5 Thinking Caluculate the length of the river that would be in each village. Students should divide the length of the river by five (total number of villages): 133 miles/5 = 26.6 miles 214 km/5 = 42.8km
