Features of a Map Title – The map’s name
Legend – the maps symbols and what they represent

Features of a Map Compass Rose – compass showing directions; always pointing North Scale – shows actual distances on a map

Features of a Map Latitude – How far N. or S. we are from the equator

Be Sure to include the following features: Title, Legend, Compass Rose, Scale, Latitude, Longitude Include Loop 610, Beltway 8, I-45, Hwy. 290, and I-10 Make sure we label the key features and key elements

Types of Maps Physical – landscape features of the area; mountains, rivers, oceans, land,

Political – boundaries of political units; cities, counties, states, countries

Historical – boundaries from the past; usually show the same place, idea, group over time

Thematic – show information connected to a specific theme; sometimes historical, trade routes, movement of peoples, economics

Population Density – the concentration of a population within a given area
Houston – low population density – people spread out New York City – very high population density – people literally on top of each other

Resource/Product Distribution – the location of natural resources and/or products within a specific time and place
