4 Dual Entry Note-taking Say, Mean, Matter
Start each group of entries in your notes by writing the title and author of the text centered on the page followed by the page numbers, paragraph numbers, and/or line numbers for that section of the text. On the left side of your notes, record the heading “SAY” and then record a quote (of 2-3 sentences) exactly as it is written in the text. Make sure to include quotes marks and the citation for the quote after the closing quotes mark but before the punctuation symbol that ends the quote. On the left side of your reading journal (under your SAY entry), record the heading “MEAN” and then explain what the quote says in your own words (summarize it in 1-3 sentences) by paraphrasing the quoted material. On the right side of your reading journal (under your SAY entry to the right of your MEAN entry),record the heading “MATTER.” Then, explain why the quote is important and how the author uses those words and phrases to communicate information (in 2-3 sentences). Consider what the author is doing and explain using “-ing” words.

SAY - “And we are having difficulties in so many of our communities and so many of our schools where kids are coming to first grade and their eyes are blazing, they’ve got their little knapsack on and they’re ready to go, and then they realize they’re not like other first graders who know books, have been read to, can do their alphabet, And by the third grade, the kids who don’t have that structure and minding in the beginning start to realize they’re behind, and what do they do? They act it out” (P9). MEAN – Difficulties in education arise because some students realize they are already behind the rest of the class when they begin school. By the third grade, students who realize they are behind the other students exhibit bad behavior which negatively impacts their educational progress. MATTER – Powell is stating why he believes educational difficulties arise. He is communicating what he believes about students who act out and is arguing that, from his point of view, students need to be raised in a structured environment before starting school. He is explaining that the education process begins before a student even begins school.

7 Homework - Dual Entry Note-taking
Identify/re-examine two quotations from “Kids Need Structure” that are key to answering our text specific question. Complete one note-taking entry (Say, Mean, Matter) for each quote you record. Complete both entries on one sheet of loose-leaf paper.
