2 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE OCT 5TH
SEV1b: Relate energy changes to food chains, food webs and trophic levels in an ecosystem Classwork: finish Succession web quest and turn in; pick up 2 pages for succession review, staple and work on that—colored pencils on table—return at end of period—due tomorrow end of class Closing: Explain the difference in primary and secondary succession

3 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE OCT 6TH
SEV1c: Explain the difference in primary and secondary succession. DO NOW: Turn in your Succession Web Quest Classwork: Succession review activity—draw neatly and color your succession pictures Closing: Explain the difference in primary and secondary succession to your table partner

5 ZOOLOGY OCT 6TH SZ2B: Explain the difference in primary and secondary succession. 6 Succession A regular pattern of changes over time in the types of species in a community May take a few years to hundreds

7 Types of Succession Primary Succession Secondary Succession

8 Primary Succession Occurs on surfaces where no ecosystem existed before New islands created by volcanoes Areas exposed after glaciers *begins in areas of no soil

9 Secondary Succession Occurs on a surface where an ecosystem previously existed Forest Fires, farmland abandoned, clear cutting, pulp wooding

10 Succession Pioneer species = first organisms to colonize any newly available area Grasses, weeds, lichens, mosses

11 Succession Climax Community = the community that eventually forms if the land is left undisturbed Maple forest, wetland area, Pine forest

12 Importance of Forest Fires
Some small natural fires remove brush and deadwood that would contribute to major fires Also allows some tree species to reproduce
