KANSAS – NEBRASKA ACT When and who? -Idea was introduced by Stephen A. Douglas -Bill passes in May of 1854 What is it? -A bill allowed the newly introduced territories of whether or not they will become a slave state. Significance? -It was a leading factor to the whole event “Bloody Kansas”. - Split the Whig party

BORDER RUFFIANS When and Where? Fall 1854 - 1855 Topeka, Kansas
Who was involved? Pro slavery settlers from Missouri led by Sen. David Atchison Anti slavery settlers from Kansas What happened? Pro-slavery settlers from Missouri went across the Kansas border to illegally vote for a pro-slavery legislature Results? Kansas’ state legislature was skewed in favor of slavery. Enraged citizens of Kansas made their own government causing conflict to follow

POTTAWATOMIE CREEK MASSACRE
When and where? -May 24-25, North of Pottawatomie Creek in Franklin County, Kansas Who was involved? - John Brown and abolitionist associates vs. Pro- Slavery Kansas settlers What happened? - John Brown was accompanied with his group, Army of the North. They attacked and killed 5 pro-slavery people. They killed each of them separately using different methods of death. Results? - Because of their death’s many more people became angry and decided to become a part of the blood shed, another cause for the beginning of “Bloody Kansas”.

BROOKS V. SUMNER When and Where? May 22, 1856
Washington D.C., Senate Chamber Who was involved? Rep. Preston Brooks of South Carolina Sen. Charles Sumner of Massachusetts Sen. Andrew Butler of South Carolina What happened? After the Sack of Lawrence, Charles Sumner gave a speech attacking Andrew Butler. His 2nd cousin, Preston Brooks, took it as an attack to his family and state and caned Sumner. Results? Preston Brooks was fined $300 Charles Sumner could not return to the Senate for years because of physical and psychological damage

“It was like some terrible chapter out of the Middle Ages, with gangs of brigand horsemen roaming the land.” -David McCullough David McCullough described the event of Bloody Kansas in an engaging and detailed way. In one of his book, American History, he included opinionated details on Bloody Kansas. The way he described the event can clearly show his concerns. For example the sentence,“They appear out of nowhere… led often by men who were no better than young thugs…” shows an almost disapproval of how they handled things.
