Movement in Cells & Revision
Biozone: p76 – 78 Heinemann:
2
Method 1: DIFFUSION Used by unicellular organisms, and cells in your body. Basic Chemistry and Physics principles. Molecules possess kinetic energy, thus can move themselves ‘around’ – DISPERSAL.
3
Movement of a molecule from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until equilibrium is reached. Most often seen in gases, but applies to liquids also, in solution.
5
Method 2: OSMOSIS Used by unicellular organisms, and cells in your body. Basic Chemistry and Physics principles. More control than diffusion due to DIFFERENTIALLY PERMEABLE MEMBRANE. a.k.a. Selectively permeable membrane
6
Movement of water molecules from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration through a differentially permeable membrane, until equilibrium is reached.
9
Description of solutions:
Hypotonic Hypertonic
10
Method 3: ACTIVE TRANSPORT
Specialised process. Breaks expectations of chemistry and physics. Against the concentration gradient, thus from low concentration to high concentration. Requires ENERGY.
